Things to See and Do
Best Times to Come
Make the most of your time by avoiding the crowds. Peak days for the aquarium are weekends, holidays, and summer days. If you are visiting on the weekend, aim for the morning (between 9 and 10 am). If you are coming on a weekday when school is in session, come after 2 pm when the school trips will have left.
Download Audio Tours Beforehand
You can enhance your visit by listening to audio tours provided by the aquarium. Download the tours from this website. Then load them onto your MP3 player or iPod. Listen to these tours during your visit. Currently, audio tours are available for the Tropical Pacific Gallery and the Northern Pacific Gallery. More tours are in the works!
The June Keyes Penguin Habitat offers views of Magellanic Penguins both above and below the water. In addition to touch screens supplying more information about this species from South America, visitors can identify individual birds by name by looking at the birds’ color-coded and name-labeled ID tags on their wings. Best of all, a crawl space allows visitors to feel as though they have entered the habitat. The penguin pictured is looking down on a visitor in this special design feature.
Visit the 10,000 square foot Shark Lagoon, home to over 150 sharks. Visitors will come face-to-face with species such as sand tiger, zebra, whitetip reef sharks, and freshwater sawfish. These predators may have you rethinking tomorrow’s swimming plans! Shark Lagoon is part of Explorer’s cove, which offers children an outdoor playground with water features, as well an aviary. Visitors can pet stingrays and bamboo sharks in Explorer Cove’s touch pools.
Learn about Sea Otter conservation and fall in love with the Southern Sea Otter in this habitat designed to allow visitors to look in on the playful nature of these animals. Visitors can watch the Sea Otters swim among kelp and fish underwater and play along rocks imitating their natural habitat.
This aquarium features several regional galleries. Species native to certain Pacific areas are displayed in habitats constructed to look like near and far regions. These galleries include the Southern California/Baja Gallery, the Northern Pacific Gallery, the Tropical Pacific Gallery, and the Lorikeet Forest.
