Corpus Christie Aquarium Exhibits
The Texas State Aquarium houses two male bottlenose dolphins in a 70,000 gallon tank. They can be viewed from above of below water level in the “Dolphin Bay Underwater Room.” The “Floating Phantoms exhibit features a wide variety of jellyfish species, including species native to the area. If you have never stopped to watch jellyfish drift and float, you are in for a hypnotic treat. See a replica of a real coral reef located 300 miles from the aquarium in the Gulf of Mexico. This exhibit is titled, “Flower Gardens” and hosts stingrays, barracuda, moray eels, and porcupine fish.
View a recreation of the type of habitats that form around oil drilling platforms, in “Islands of Steel.” No aquarium visit would be complete without visiting the touch pools. Visitors to the Corpus Christie Aquarium can touch hermit crabs, lightning whelks, and pencil urchins. There are many other things to see such as birds of prey, otters, and sea turtles. If you are brining children, don’t forget to allow time for the HEB Splash Park, a zero-depth water playground with water canons and water jets!
Make the Most of Your Time
The aquarium suggests investing some planning time on the front end to ensure a great visit on the day of your trip. Check the presentation schedule here to organize your day. Also, some exhibits and presentations are outdoors, so weather can impact your visit.
If you will be viewing Wild Flight, the scuba divers, or the dolphin shows, arrive 15 to 30 minutes early to get a good seat. This popular attraction gets crowded, especially during summers and between the hours of 11 am and 3 pm. Your best bet is to visit on weekday mornings or afternoons. If you will be visiting during a peak time, try to carry your baby in a baby backpack or sling so you don’t have to maneuver your stroller through tight crowds. The average visit lasts around 3 hours and involves plenty of walking so wear comfortable shoes.
